Mint for flatulence

There are many natural solutions for reducing flatulence. None of them eliminate flatulence totally. This is because we are mammals and gas is a natural part of digestion. Peppermint is the herb of choice for many of man's most common maladies. For sinus congestion, sore throat, pain, sneezing, coughing and chilliness, a strong cup of tea can ease discomfort and bring relief. Breathing peppermint oil alone on a handkerchief or in combination with a couple of drops of lavender essential oil also alleviates migraine headaches for some individuals.
A steam made of a few drops of peppermint oil added to boiling water is a beneficial way to get relief from sinus congestion. Pour boiling hot water and 2-3 drops of peppermint oil in a bowl, place it on a table; sit in front of it, drape a towel over your head, breathe deeply. Be careful to keep a safe distance away from the bowl to prevent burning, stay underneath the towel for 10-15 minutes. Peppermint is also ideal for flavoring and harmonizing herbal blends, combining well with other flu remedies such as elderflower and boneset.
A cup of cold peppermint tea stimulates digestion, settles the stomach, alleviates nausea, indigestion and reduces flatulence. A couple of sprigs of peppermint heated in warm milk are helpful with stomach upset. However, for individuals diagnosed with GERD, gastro-intestinal reflux disorder/hiatal hernia with acid reflux, peppermint could actually exacerbate indigestion because it relaxes the sphincter at the top of the stomach. In this instance peppermint is contraindicated, and should be avoided. Consult with your health practitioner before using this herbal remedy.
