In reality, the prevalence of lactose intolerance in the U.S. is difficult to assess accurately. Still, it is likely much lower than suggested based upon self-report, according to the National Institutes of Health [1]. In part, this is because individuals have a tendency to misinterpret any gastrointestinal upset following a dairy-containing meal as evidence of lactose intolerance [2]. Most people, however — even those with lower-than-normal lactase levels — do not report gastrointestinal upset after being exposed to lactose in a blind challenge, explains the NIH.
Lactose intolerance results from insufficient production of the enzyme lactase (LCT), which the small intestine uses to help break down lactose, or milk sugar. Lactose is a disaccharide, meaning it’s made up of two smaller sugar units called monosaccharides. The small intestine can absorb monosaccharides, but disaccharides (and larger combinations of monosaccharides, called polysaccharides) have to be digested into their monosaccharide building blocks before they can be absorbed. The digestive tract uses a wide variety of enzymes to accomplish this task. Digestive enzymes are very specific in their function; the enzyme responsible for breaking down lactose, for instance, can’t digest sucrose (table sugar). Sucrase, the enzyme that breaks down sucrose, is similarly incapable of digesting lactose. As such, a person must produce lactase in order to digest lactose.

In those individuals with true lactose intolerance, the absence of appropriate quantities of lactase means that lactose passes undigested into the large intestine. There, native flora (naturally-occurring bacterial species) of the gut break down the lactose to provide for their own energy needs. This results in the accumulation of a large amount of gas, which is a waste product of bacterial lactose digestion. The gas leads to the sensations of bloating and cramping, and can result in flatulence. Undigested lactose in the large intestine can also cause diarrhea.

Most people make lactase in appropriate amounts early in life; without lactase, babies would be incapable of digesting breast milk (which is actually higher in lactose than cow’s milk). Some ethnic groups produce less lactase after the age of weaning, leading to lactose intolerance that begins in childhood. This lactose intolerance persists throughout adulthood, and is most common in individuals of African, Hispanic (non-European), Native American, and Asian descent. Europeans are much less likely to develop lactose intolerance post-babyhood. Further, there’s some evidence to suggest that lactose intolerance increases with advancing age [3], though there isn’t a significant body of data supporting this.

Dear Anon.: Flatulence, the passage of rectal gas, occurs 10-20 times a day for almost everyone. Some of that gas comes from swallowed air.

Eat food slowly to lessen the chances of getting air into the digestive tract. Most of the gas is due to the fermentation of foods by bacteria in the colon. A few illnesses are associated with excessive flatulence — celiac disease and pancreatic insufficiency being two examples.

The pancreas supplies enzymes to digest food. Without those enzymes, bacteria digest the food. I can't implicate the car accident as a cause.

Make a few adjustments to your diet. I'll name foods that are the most troublesome. Don't eliminate all of them at once.

Pick two or three, and keep them out of your diet for two weeks. If you don't note a reduction in gas by two weeks, start eating those foods again and eliminate three others. Milk products, including cheeses and ice cream, fruits and carbonated beverages are three foodstuffs to eliminate in trial one. After two weeks, if there's no whiff of change, go back to eating those foods, and stop eating beans, peas and pastas. If a third trial is necessary, get rid of cabbage, broccoli and cauliflower. Brussels sprouts and lentils are other gas producers. If you note that you are gassy after particular foods, then erase them from your diet.

Well, two such mischievous scamps, seventh graders from Ohio, have been suspended by their school for doing just that. Farting on their school bus.

To be fair, it wasn't their first infraction. They'd been warned a few weeks back by the driver after a similar display of synchronized farting. This time around, the gas-passing was so spirited, it "caused a ruckus on the bus amid a flurry of laughs, jeers and lowering of windows." The driver reported them to the principal, who decided to suspend them.

"He suggested my son should hold his gas on this hourlong bus ride, if in fact he has gas," one of the boys' fathers told the Columbus Dispatch. "When it happens, it just happens. It's not intentional."

The boy's mother, meanwhile, was similarly sympathetic, being a chronic sufferer of the involuntary toots herself.

"As a sufferer of gastro-intestinal issues who was recently hospitalized for these issues, I take great offense to passing gas being cause for suspension and marked as an obscene gesture," [she] wrote to The Dispatch.

Whatever triumph that boy might have felt in the school bus that day, it will come nowhere close to the shame he's about to carry around with him for the rest of his life, knowing his mother had to craft that "farting runs in the family" excuse note for him and send it to the local paper.

Flatulence Facts
Most digestion occurs within the small intestine, where enzymes and bile break down food. These enzymes, however, are unable to break down some elements, such as specific sugars in beans and other plants. Thus, undigested matter passes into the large intestine, where bacteria ferments it. This leads to the production of "flatus" (gas), composed primarily of carbon dioxide, methane and hydrogen.

Ironically, the more healthful and fiber-rich your diet, the more likely you are to experience flatulence. Other factors include how much air you swallow, the amount of bacteria residing in the intestine and the time it takes for food to pass through the colon.

"It's not the foods themselves, but the body's reaction to them that causes the problem --and that we can largely control," says Karen Collins, RD, nutrition adviser for the American Institute for Cancer Research (AICR) in Washington, DC. "There are a host of small changes people can make in how they cook, eat and live that will help eliminate side effects like bloating and gas."

Organic Diet Do's and Don'ts
Most Americans fail to consume enough fiber-rich fruit, vegetables, whole grains and beans, Collins notes -- a phenomenon that can lead to gastrointestinal distress. Sometimes, however, when we add large quantities of organic fruits and vegetables to our diets in an effort to eat well, we go overboard. Our bodies then have trouble adjusting to the change, and we may develop gas.

Instead, we need to increase fiber gradually so our gut has a chance to get into gear. The AICR offers the following tips for preventing a "personal gas crisis":

1. Start Small
"The most important thing is to give the body a chance to adapt to an increase in fiber," Collins says. She urges Organic Authority readers to start with a bowl of whole-grain cereal one morning. Each day thereafter, add a single serving of fruit, a vegetable or whole-grain bread. In the beginning, choose foods that contain easier-to-digest soluble fiber, such as oats, oat bran, apples and carrots.

Cook onions, garlic and cruciferous vegetables (broccoli, cauliflower). Soak dried beans before cooking with them to remove sugars that are fermented by intestinal bacteria.

2. Drink Extra Fluid and Increase Exercise
To enjoy the benefit of organic food, remember to drink plenty of water and get enough exercise -- both of which help move fiber through the colon.

"Fermentation is what produces the gas, and the longer food remains in the digestive tract, the more fermentation occurs," Collins says. "So, as a general rule, anytime you increase fiber intake, you must also increase water intake along with it. This is necessary to facilitate food's transit through the gut."

3. In the Beginning, Cook Vegetables and Fruits
Roasting, baking, broiling, poaching and steaming organic vegetables and fruit helps your digestive system break them down, without delaying passage through the colon. Conversely, if you cook vegetables in oil and butter, they'll remain in the stomach longer.

Food intolerance could be the main reason people with chronic inflammation disease (CID) continue to suffer, scientists have revealed.
Research carried out by a team at York University and food allergy researchers YorkTest showed a vast improvement in people suffering from various inflammatory diseases after they identified and eliminated certain problem foods from their diet.
More than 75% of the 5,000 participants who took part in the study showed the improvement within three weeks of cutting out the foods, which were identified through an IgG antibodies test, commonly used to identify food intolerance.

The other week, I came out of the newsroom to find my colleague leaping out of the lift in a hell of a hurry.
This in itself does not seem unusual except that he had departed just moments before me, with the intention of going home.
He turned to me and said "I’m waiting for the next lift. Someone has farted in that one and I don’t want to be blamed for it by the person waiting at the bottom."
Conceding he had a fair point, I waited for the next lift too.
Now, I’m no Miss Manners, but surely etiquette would suggest suspension of any farting in the lift, given its confined space and lack of ventilation. Unless the lift is incredibly slow, surely you can wait a few floors?
There’s certainly etiquette around flatulence and running. In every group I’ve ever run with, the situation seems to be: just ignore it. The person who farted never apologises and everyone else pretends to have gone momentarily deaf.
I guess it’s based on the knowledge that we’re all at risk of it happening . Running seems to put pressure on the digestive system which appears to, er, encourage movement.
In the grand scheme of things, there are many things worse than runner’s trots. However, in terms of an event or training, it’s pretty much as bad as it gets. This nasty affliction, which is exactly what the name suggests, is the very reason one should never, ever eat anything new the day of, or even the day before, a race.
I know of one runner who only got as far as the first toilet in a half marathon because of a crab curry the night before.
I had an unfortunate experience in my early days of events, before I was experienced enough to know better, involving a nutrition bar and club triathlon. That goes down in my memory as worst race ever.
Most people who have been doing crazy recreational activities long enough seem to have horror stories. Which become amusing once enough time has passed to get some perspective. Before that, not so much.
Purely in the interests of being on the safe side, I think I know the location of every public toilet in the Wellington region.

Man stabbed after passing gas

Flatulence upset a man to the point of assault Tuesday at the Clarion Inn on South Fourth Street.
Juan Antonio Salano Castellano, 35, was sharing a hotel room with four other individuals. At the time of the crime, one roommate was showering and two were outside on their cell phones.
While eating in the hotel room with another man, Castellano passed gas. The flatulent act enraged the man, who threw a large kitchen knife across the room, Waco police said. The hurled knife cut Castellano on his leg.
The man then walked across the hotel room, picked up the kitchen knife and stabbed Castellano in the left side of his chest, the Waco police said.
The other roommates walked in the hotel room to find Castellano had been stabbed and attempted to take him to the nearest emergency room. Once the men realized they weren't aware of the location for the nearest hospital, and an ambulance and police were called.
According to the press release, Castellano was transported from the hotel by East Texas Medical Center to Hillcrest Baptist Medical Center.
Hillcrest Hospital has no records of the victim's hospital visit Tuesday. The victim had not been to the hospital since 2008, a Hillcrest Hospital representative said.
Jose Braule Ramirez, 33, was arrested in the hotel room and charged with aggravated assault with a deadly weapon. The charge carries a minimum prison sentence of 2 years and a maximum of 20 years and a fine not to exceed $10,000.
Ramirez is being held at the McLennan County Jail in lieu of $15,000 bail.
The jail is also holding Ramirez because of an immigration detainer. As of mid-day Wednesday Ramirez had not posted bail.

LAKELAND. Florida - It's a practiced art among most middle school boys: The passing of gas and blaming it on someone sitting next to you.
Farting has been going on for years, maybe decades, heck, maybe even since the dawn of mankind. It's always, well, usually funny. But beware of laughing out loud at farts. It could land you and your sense of humor in the toilet.
Just ask Jonathan Locke Jr., a Polk County eighth grader who got blamed for farting on a school bus earlier this week and ended up being banned from the bus for three days. Actually, it wasn't the farting that resulted in his ouster, it was the disruption that followed, school officials said.
"I guess it was just because I was laughing so hard," Jonathan said Thursday. "I don't know."
The 15-year-old attends the Bill Duncan Excel Center, an alternative school in Lakeland. He denied making the sound on the bus Monday. He said a friend was making flatulent sounds with his mouth.
That cracked him up, he said. Then came the rank odor, which made the situation hysterical, he said.
"I just thought it was funny," he said.
A day later, when he walked onto the bus to go home, he was handed a note telling him he had been barred from the bus for three days.
"Jonathan passes gas on the bus to make the other children laugh and it is so stink (sic) that you can't breathe after he does it," the bus driver wrote in a disciplinary note that contains the three-day suspension sanction.
Jonathan said he walked across the street to where a relative works and his father came and picked him up.
He has had to get rides from his father over the next couple of days. On Thursday, he stayed home from school.
Jonathan Locke Sr. thinks the school went a bit too far in this flatulence fracas and said the whole ordeal has disrupted his son's education.
"I don't know how they can do it, but apparently they can," he said. "They say it's disrupting the bus and they can do whatever they want to if it comes to disrupting the children on the bus."
Locke Sr. admitted that sometimes farts are funny but said the end result here was not funny.
"He's already had enough problems," the elder Locke said. "I'm sure this isn't going to help him overcome the problems he already has."
He said his son told him he was not the passer of the gas on the bus that Monday afternoon.
"I know you can't search somebody for something like that," he said. The teen told his father: 'I didn't even do it … It was really the kid in front of me.' "
Polk County school district officials either declined to talk about the matter or didn't return messages today.

The gas responsible for the foul odour of flatulence and rotten eggs may play an important role in regulating blood pressure, Canadian researchers say in a study released Friday.
Hydrogen sulphide — a toxic gas that, among other things, is made by bacteria living in the human intestinal tract — relaxes blood vessels and allows for easier blood flow, according to the study in Friday's edition of the journal Science.
It is hard "not to overestimate the biological importance of hydrogen sulphide or its implications in hypertension," writes Rui Wang, a physiologist at Lakehead University in Thunder Bay, Ont. Wang co-authored the study with Lingyun Wu, a pharmacologist of the University of Saskatchewan and other researchers from the Johns Hopkins medical school in Baltimore.
The five-year mouse study found that an enzyme called CSE produced the gas in cells lining the walls of blood vessels throughout the body.
That finding confirmed earlier research that suggested a link between the enzyme and the gas.
In the study, researchers bred mice with lower-than-average levels of CSE and found that the engineered animals had significantly depleted levels of hydrogen sulphide compared to a group with normal levels of the enzyme.
The researchers also found that the mice with CSE deficiencies had blood pressure levels that were 20 per cent higher than the normal mice.
However, when the mice bred for lower CSE levels were given methacholine, a drug given to relax blood vessels, their blood pressure levels were not significantly different than those with normal levels of the enzyme. The researchers said this suggests the gas is responsible for the change in blood pressure.
The findings could lead to new treatments for high blood pressure in humans, said the study authors.
"Now that we know hydrogen sulphide's role in regulating blood pressure, it may be possible to design drug therapies that enhance its formation as an alternative to the current methods of treatment for hypertension," study co-author Dr. Solomon H. Snyder, a neuroscientist at Johns Hopkins University, said in a Johns Hopkins news release.
